?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=Where+Did+the+Word+%22Cognitive%22+Come+From+Anyway%3F&rft.creator=Green%2C+Christopher+D.&rft.subject=Cognitive+Psychology&rft.subject=Philosophy+of+Mind&rft.subject=Philosophy+of+Science&rft.description=Cognitivism+is+the+ascendant+movement+in+psychology+these+days.+It+reaches+from+cognitive+psychology+into+social+psychology%2C+personality%2C+psychotherapy%2C+development%2C+and+beyond.+Few+psychologists+know+the+philosophical+history+of+the+term%2C+%22cognitive%2C%22+and+often+use+it+as+though+it+were+completely+synonymous+with+%22psychological%22+or+%22mental.%22+In+this+paper%2C+I+trace+the+origins+of+the+term+%22cognitive%22+in+the+ethical+theories+of+the+early+20th+century%2C+and+through+the+logical+positivistic+philosophy+of+science+of+this+century's+middle+part.+In+both+of+these+settings%2C+%22cognitive%22+referred+not+primarily+to+the+psychological+but%2C+rather%2C+to+the+truth-evaluable+(i.e.%2C+those+propositions+about+which+one+can+say+that+they+are+either+true+or+false).+I+argue+that%2C+strictly+speaking%2C+cognitivism+differs+from+traditional+mentalism+in+being+the+study+of+only+those+aspects+of+the+mental+that+can+be+subjected+to+truth+conditional+analysis+(or+sufficiently+similar+%22conditions+of+satisfaction%22).+This+excludes+traditionally+troublesome+aspects+of+the+mental+such+as+consciousness%2C+qualia%2C+and+(the+subjective+aspects+of)+emotion.+Although+cognitive+science+has+since+grown+to+include+the+study+of+some+of+these+phenomena%2C+it+is+important+to+recognize+that+one+of+the+original+aims+of+the+cognitivist+movement+was+to+re-introduce+belief+and+desire+into+psychology%2C+while+still+protecting+it+from+the+kinds+of+criticism+that+behaviorists+had+used+to+bring+down+full-blown+mentalism+at+the+beginning+of+the+century.+&rft.date=1996&rft.type=Journal+(On-line%2FUnpaginated)&rft.type=PeerReviewed&rft.format=text%2Fhtml&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F1179%2F1%2Fcog-orig.htm&rft.identifier=++Green%2C+Christopher+D.++(1996)+Where+Did+the+Word+%22Cognitive%22+Come+From+Anyway%3F++%5BJournal+(On-line%2FUnpaginated)%5D+++++&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F1179%2F
