--- abstract: 'Do we conduct our conscious propositional thinking in natural language? Or is such language only peripherally related to human conscious thought-processes? In this paper I shall present a partial defence of the former view, by arguing that the only real alternative is eliminativism about conscious propositional thinking. Following some introductory remarks, I shall state the argument for this conclusion, and show how that conclusion can be true. Thereafter I shall defend each of the three main premises in turn.' altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Carruthers given: Peter honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1998 date_type: published datestamp: 2001-01-11 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/12/03 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: - family: Patterson given: Sarah honourific: '' lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 1203 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/text_html.png;/1203/1/Concthnk.htm full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'conscious thinking, language in thought, self-knowledge' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:54:28 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 4 pagerange: ~ pubdom: FALSE publication: Mind and language publisher: Blackwell refereed: TRUE referencetext: | Armstrong, D. 1968: A Materialist Theory of the Mind.
