--- abstract: "The importance of pragmatic aspects in conditional reasoning was assessed in the performance of 54 subjects (26 females and 28 male; mean age 17.6 years) on 48 conditional inference problems, using a 3 x 2 x 4 design, with repeated measurements. The independent variables were probability of empirical frequency in the real world, type of conditional rule and scenario availability. Number of correct responses and subjects'certainty about the correctness on their responses were the dependent variables. The results showed: a) the scenario availability is not sufficient in itself to explain differences in performance, but it does affect the subject's degree of confidence in their conclusions; b) there is an interaction between probability of empirical frequency in the real world and type of conditional rule on correct performance. The results were contrasted with the predictions made by the mental models theory and its revised version proposed by Evans (1993). These findings support the semantic theories of conditional reasoning." altloc: - http://www.ucm.es/info/Psi/docs/journal/contents_v2_n1_1999.htm chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Valiña given: Mª Dolores honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Seoane given: Gloria honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Ferraces given: Mª José honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Martín given: Montserrat honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1999 date_type: published datestamp: 2001-06-08 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/15/45 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: - family: Fernández Sánchez given: Juan honourific: '' lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 1545 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/text_html.png;/1545/1/Valinacols4.html full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'Deductive Reasoning, Conditional Reasoning, Pragmatic Reasoning, availability of the scenario, empirical relation between antecedent and consequent' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:54:40 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 1 pagerange: 20-31 pubdom: FALSE publication: The Spanish Journal of Psychology publisher: Faculty of Psychology.
