--- abstract: "Cheney & Seyfarth (C&S) argue for a hybrid approach which 'place (empiricistic findings) tentatively within the framework of a more mentalistic approach'(p.9). The book is an important contribution to clarify the value and limits of the intentional approach in interpreting monkey behaviour, particularly C&S's excellent field work with vervets. But, unintentionally, it also demonstrates that cognitive science is more a perspective than a scientific discipline. In order to illustrate this, I shall consider the following topics: evolution of intelligence, concept formation, philosophy of science" altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: cheney & seyfarth (1992) Precis of confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Dittrich given: Winand honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1992 date_type: published datestamp: 1998-09-29 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/01/78 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 178 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/text_plain.png;/178/1/BBS1.htm full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'primatology, philosophy, mind, intelligence, concepts, communication, intentionality, monkeys' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:53:43 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: 152 pubdom: FALSE publication: Behavioral and Brain Sciences publisher: ~ refereed: TRUE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 8 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-09-12 16:24:42 subjects: - bio-ani-behav - bio-ani-cog - bio-behav - bio-eco - bio-etho - bio-evo - bio-pop - bio-primat - bio-socio - bio-theory succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: Is the monkeys' world scientifically impenetrable? type: journalp userid: 501 volume: 15
