--- abstract: "In this review of Allen & Bekoff's Species of Mind (1997), underlying theoretical assumptions of cognitive ethology are examined from a biological and philosophical viewpoint. In particular, the aim of the book to constitute a foundational concept for cognitive ethology is addressed. The ambiguity of theory-of-mind approaches in animal cognition is discussed as a major problem for causal explanations in behavioural biology." altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Dittrich given: W.H. honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1998 date_type: published datestamp: 1998-12-02 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/01/81 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 181 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/text_html.png;/181/1/anbeh98.htm full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'cognitive ethology, consciousness, intentionality, folk psychology, theory-of-mind approach, behaviourism, animal cognition, philosophy of science, methodology, animal behaviour, naturalizing the mind, mental continuity' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:53:43 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: 1305-1307 pubdom: FALSE publication: Animal Behaviour publisher: ~ refereed: TRUE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 8 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-09-12 16:24:44 subjects: - bio-theory - phil-mind succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: Book review of Allen & Bekoff (1997) on Cognitive Ethology type: journalp userid: 501 volume: 56
