?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=Social+and+spatial+structure+in+brook+chars+(Salvelinus+fontinalis)+under+competition+for+food+and+shelter%2Fshade&rft.creator=Caron%2C+Jean&rft.creator=Beaugrand%2C+Jacques+P.&rft.subject=Animal+Behavior&rft.subject=Behavioral+Biology&rft.subject=Ethology&rft.description=Salmonids%2C+outside+their+reproductive+period%2C+are+seen+to+have+two+types+of+territory+called+%22territorial+mosaic%22+and+%22partial+territory%22.+The+first+aspect+of+this+research+aimed+at+identifying+the+type+of+territory+established+by+mature+brook+chars+in+artificial+streams.+After+this%2C+the+biological+value+of+spacing+out+was+studied+with+regard+to+two+resources%3A+food%2C+and+shelter%2Fshade+which+gives+protection.+Three+5+X+1+X+1+m+artificial+streams+were+built+on+the+edge+of+a+natural+brook+which+provided+a+continuous+water+supply.+One+hundred+and+fifty+mature+brook+chars+(Salvelinus+fontinalis)+taken+from+that+brook+were+distributed+into+30+colonies+with+5+members+apiece.+Three+experimental+conditions+were+created%2C+and+10+colonies+were+submitted+to+each+of+these.+In+the+first+experimental+condition%2C+the+quality+of+shelter%2Fshade+differed+in+3+sectors+of+the+artificial+streams%2C+whereas+the+quantity+of+food+remained+the+same+for+all+3.+In+the+second+experimental+condition%2C+the+quality+of+shelter%2Fshade+was+identical%2C+while+the+quantity+of+food+differed+in+the+3+sectors.+In+the+last+condition%2C+conflict+was+created%3A+the+fish+had+to+choose+between+an+area+which+offered+excellent+shelter%2Fshade+but+no+food%2C+one+which+provided+ample+nourishment+but+no+shelter%2Fshade%2C+and+one+in+which+all+those+resources+were+present+at+intermediate+levels.+Observation+of+the+30+colonies+revealed+%22partial+territory%22+in+all+cases.+These+corresponded+to+more+or+less+complete+aggressive-dominance+hierarchies.+Almost+every+alpha+established+territory%2C+and+the+number+of+territorial+individuals+progressively+decreased+throughout+inferior+ranks.+Alphas+had+exclusive+use+of+their+territory.+Lower-ranking+individuals+successfully+defended+their+territory+against+their+subordinates%2C+but+were+unable+to+drive+away+higher-ranking+conspecifics.+Overall+results+also+indicated+that+the+highest-ranking+brook+chars+in+the+aggressive-dominance+hierarchies+more+frequently+established+their+territories+in+sectors+of+the+streams+with+good+shelter%2Fshade+than+in+sectors+with+good+alimentary+conditions.&rft.publisher=Elsevier&rft.date=1988&rft.type=Journal+(Paginated)&rft.type=PeerReviewed&rft.format=application%2Fpdf&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F1964%2F3%2Fcaron-beaugrand-1988.pdf&rft.identifier=++Caron%2C+Jean+and+Beaugrand%2C+Jacques+P.++(1988)+Social+and+spatial+structure+in+brook+chars+(Salvelinus+fontinalis)+under+competition+for+food+and+shelter%2Fshade.++%5BJournal+(Paginated)%5D+++++&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F1964%2F
