--- abstract: | The quantum logical `or' is analyzed from a physical perspective. We show that it is the existence of EPR-like correlation states for the quantum mechanical entity under consideration that make it nonequivalent to the classical situation. Specifically, the presence of potentiality in these correlation states gives rise to the quantum deviation from the classical logical `or'. We show how this arises not only in the microworld, but also in macroscopic situations where EPR-like correlation states are present. We investigate how application of this analysis to concepts could alleviate some well known problems in cognitive science. altloc: - http://www.vub.ac.be/CLEA/liane/PAPERS00/fop/or.ps - http://www.vub.ac.be/CLEA/liane/PAPERS00/fop/or.pdf chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Aerts given: Diederik honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: D'Hondt given: Ellie honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Gabora given: Liane honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 2000-10 date_type: published datestamp: 2004-02-03 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/34/15 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: - family: van der Merwe given: Alwyn honourific: '' lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 3415 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/3415/1/or.pdf|/style/images/fileicons/application_postscript.png;/3415/2/or.ps full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'quantum, nondisjunction, correlation, potential, logic, concept, classical, state, conjunction, negation, category, pet fish problem' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:55:28 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 9 pagerange: 1473-1480 pubdom: FALSE publication: Foundations of Physics publisher: Plenum/Kluwer refereed: TRUE referencetext: |- Aerts, D., Aerts, S., Broekaert, J. and Gabora, L., 2000, ``The violation of Bell inequalities in the macroworld", Foundations of Physics, vol. 30 (9): 1387-1414.
