--- abstract: 'This paper uses an example from biology, the homology concept, to argue that current versions of the causal theory of reference give an incomplete account of reference determination. It is suggested that in addition to samples and stereotypical properties, the scientific use of concepts and the epistemic interests pursued with concepts are important factors in determining the reference of natural kind terms.' altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: 'August 8-14, 2004' conference: 27th International Wittgenstein Symposium confloc: 'Kirchberg am Wechsel, Austria' contact_email: ~ creators_id: - 4865 creators_name: - family: Brigandt given: Ingo honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 2004 date_type: published datestamp: 2004-11-13 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/39/35 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: - family: Marek given: Johann Christian honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Reicher given: Maria Elisabeth honourific: '' lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 3935 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/3935/1/ALWS_04_Brigandt.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'reference, causal theory of reference, natural kinds, concepts, homology' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:55:43 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: 58-60 pubdom: FALSE publication: ~ publisher: Austrian Ludwig Wittgenstein Society refereed: TRUE referencetext: |- Ax, Peter 1989 “Homologie in der Biologie – ein Relationsbegriff im Vergleich von Arten”, Zoologische Beiträge N.F. 32, 487-496.
