--- abstract: 'We present an approach to spatial reasoning that is based on homogenous coordinate systems and their transformations. In contrast to qualitative approaches, spatial relations are not represented by symbolic expressions only but additionally by parameters with constraints, which are subsets of real numbers. Our work is based on the notion of mental models in text understanding introduced in cognitive science. That is, we model the understanding of descriptions of spatial configurations by constructing a representation of the class of situations that are compatible with the description. Within our approach a spatial relation between two objects is represented by constraining the position of one of the objects with respect to the reference frame of the other one. That is, inferences of spatial relations not given explicitly in a text depend on the frame of reference which is presumed by the (human or computer) system. In this paper we describe a general framework for spatial reasoning based on the notion of mental models and we present some empirical results concerning the influence of the selected reference frame on the inference process.' altloc: - http://ki.cs.tu-berlin.de/~schmid/pub-ps/trierpaper-lv.ps chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Claus given: Berry honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Eyferth given: Klaus honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Gips given: Carsten honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Hörnig given: Robin honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Schmid given: Ute honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Wiebrock given: Sylvia honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Wysotzki given: Fritz honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1998 date_type: published datestamp: 1998-07-01 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/04/85 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: - family: Freksa given: Christian honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Habel given: Christopher honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Wender given: Karl-Friedrich honourific: '' lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 485 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_postscript.png;/485/2/trierpapier%2Dlv.ps full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'text understanding, mental models, spatial inference, constraint satisfaction, transformation matrices' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:53:59 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: 241-266 pubdom: FALSE publication: 'Spatial Cognition - An interdisciplinary approach to representing and processing spatial knowledge' publisher: 'Springer, Berlin' refereed: FALSE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 10 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-09-12 16:28:49 subjects: - cog-psy - comp-sci-art-intel - comp-sci-art-intel - psy-ling succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: Reference Frames for Spatial Inference in Text Understanding type: bookchapter userid: 453 volume: ~
