--- abstract: 'Several studies suggest that cyclooxygenase-2 contributes to the delayed progression of ischemic brain damage. In this study we examined whether the highly selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor DFU reduces neuronal damage when administered several hours after 5 min of transient forebrain ischemia in gerbils. The extent of ischemic injury was assessed behaviorally by measuring the increases in locomotor activity and by histopathological evaluation of the extent of CA1 hippocampal pyramidal cell injury 7 days after ischemia. DFU treatment (10 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly reduced hippocampal neuronal damage even if the treatment is delayed until 12 h after ischemia. These results suggest that selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors may be a valuable therapeutic strategy for ischemic brain injury.' altloc: - http://candelariojalil.googlepages.com/Brain_Res_Candelario-Jalil_et_al_2002.pdf chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Candelario-Jalil given: Eduardo honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Alvarez given: Dalia honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Castaneda given: Juana M. honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Al-Dalain given: Saied M. honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Martinez-Sanchez given: Gregorio honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Merino given: Nelson honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Leon given: Olga S. honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 2002 date_type: published datestamp: 2007-08-20 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/56/45 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: - family: Bloom given: Floyd honourific: '' lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 5645 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/5645/1/Brain_Res_2002_Candelario%2DJalil_et_al.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'cyclooxygenase-2; cerebral ischemia; neuroprotection; hippocampus; gerbil; DFU; prostaglandin E2; stroke; brain ' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:56:56 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 2 pagerange: 212-215 pubdom: FALSE publication: Brain Research publisher: Elsevier refereed: TRUE referencetext: | [1] A.M.
