--- abstract: 'Along with advances in brain technologies comes the ability to enhance the cognitive and affective states of normal people. In this essay, I examine a relatively young technology used in cognitive neuroscience called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). I explain what it is, how it works and what some of its applications are. I suggest that a potential source of reservation one might have regarding brain-altering enhancement is the threat it seemingly poses to the subjective importance of mental states. I then consider the possibility of its being used as an enhancement device and question the authenticity of abilities of individuals that are enhanced by use of TMS. I conclude that judgments regarding the appropriateness of such neurocognitive enhancements should be considered on a case by case basis.' altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: June 2008 conference: Society for Philosophy and Psychology confloc: 'Philadelphia, PA' contact_email: ~ creators_id: - stie0076@umn.edu creators_name: - family: Stieg given: 'Chuck ' honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 2008-06-18 date_type: submitted datestamp: 2008-08-24 10:57:20 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/61/72 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 6172 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/other.png;/6172/1/Neuroethical_Considerations_of_TMS_for_SPPconference.doc|/style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/6172/2/Neuroethical_Considerations_of_TMS_for_SPPconference.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: unpub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, neuroethics, enhancement, technology, neuropsychiatry' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:57:10 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: ~ pubdom: FALSE publication: ~ publisher: ~ refereed: TRUE referencetext: "Boroojerdi, B., Phipps M., Kopylev L., Wharton C.M., Cohen L.G., Grafman J. 2001.
