--- abstract: 'Autism is a brain development disorder that first appears during infancy or childhood, and generally follows a steady course without remission. Impairments result from maturation-related changes in various systems of the brain. Autism is one of the five pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), which are characterized by widespread abnormalities of social interactions and communication, and severely restricted interests and highly repetitive behavior. The reported incidence of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) has increased markedly over the past decade. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has recently estimated the prevalence of ASDs in the United States at approximately 5.6 per 1000 (1 of 155 to 1 of 160) children. Several metabolic defects, such as phenylketonuria, are associated with autistic symptoms. In deciding upon the appropriate evaluation scheme a clinician must consider a host of different factors. The guidelines in this article have been developed to assist the clinician in the consideration of these factors.' altloc: - http://www.ojhas.org/issue29/2009-1-1.htm chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: - ananthnrao@yahoo.co.in - ~ - ~ - ~ - ~ creators_name: - family: Rao given: AN honourific: Mr lineage: '' - family: Koch given: M honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Suresh Kumar given: V honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Ghosh given: S honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Shobha given: G honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 2009-05-05 date_type: published datestamp: 2009-07-02 01:46:16 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/65/56 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: - Kakkilaya BS editors_name: - family: Kakkilaya given: Srinivas honourific: Dr lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 6556 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/6556/1/2009%2D1%2D1.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'Autism, Biomarkers, Immunology, Metabolic profile' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:57:22 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 1 pagerange: ~ pubdom: TRUE publication: Online Journal of Health and Allied Sciences publisher: Dr. BS Kakkilaya refereed: TRUE referencetext: "1.Fillipek PA, Accardo PJ, Baranek GT, Cook Jr. EH, Dawson G, Gordon B, Gravel JS, Johnson CP, Kellen RJ, Levy SE, Tuchman RF, Volkmar FR.
