?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=Learning+as+social+and+neural.&rft.creator=Roschelle%2C+J.&rft.creator=Clancey%2C+William+J.&rft.subject=Developmental+Psychology&rft.subject=Neuropsychology&rft.subject=Epistemology&rft.subject=Social+Psychology&rft.description=Representations+are+created+and+given+meaning+in+a+shared+perceptual+space%2C+where+they+are+spoken%2C+written%2C+and+drawn+in+the+context+of+social+activity.+Consequently%2C+problems+in+science+education+cross+the+boundaries+of+traditional+modularization+of+the+mind+into+separate+perceptual%2C+representation%2C+and+communication+components+that+act+at+distinct+times%2C+in+distinct+domains.+We+illustrate+these+issues+with+a+case+study+of+physics+learning+using+a+simulation+program.+The+learners+are+initially+uncertain+about+what+aspects+of+motion+to+see%2C+where+the+representations+are+on+the+screen%2C+and+how+to+express+the+relationship+between+vector+notation+and+motion.+At+a+local+level%2C+the+students+jointly+coordinate+conversational+and+perception-action+processes+to+maintain+a+mutually+intelligible+stream+of+activity.+At+a+slightly+broader+level%2C+they+use+perception%2C+language%2C+and+gesture+to+construct+a+shared+understanding+of+what+the+notation+on+the+computer+screen+means.+Even+more+broadly%2C+the+students+use+their+understanding+of+the+notation+to+relate+their+activity+to+ways+in+which+scientists+address+similar+situations.+We+conclude+that+learning+to+make+sharp+distinctions+from+a+repertoire+of+fuzzy%2C+everyday+descriptions+requires+simultaneous%2C+coordination+of+perception%2C+gesture%2C+and+language%3B+one+cannot+assume+competence+in+two+areas+and+analyze+only+the+third.&rft.date=1992&rft.type=Journal+(Paginated)&rft.type=PeerReviewed&rft.format=text%2Fhtml&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F685%2F1%2F122.htm&rft.identifier=++Roschelle%2C+J.+and+Clancey%2C+William+J.++(1992)+Learning+as+social+and+neural.++%5BJournal+(Paginated)%5D+++++&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F685%2F
