--- abstract: "A useful way to explain the notions of implicit and explicit learning in ACT-R is to define implicit learning as learning by ACT-R's learning mechanisms, and explicit learning as the results of learning goals. This idea complies with the usual notion of implicit learning as unconscious and always active and explicit learning as intentional and conscious. Two models will be discussed to illustrate this point. First a model of a classical implicit memory task, the SUGARFACTORY scenario by Berry & Broadbent (1984) will be discussed, to show how ACT-R can model implicit learning. The second model is of the so-called Fincham task (Anderson & Fincham, 1994), and exhibits both implicit and explicit learning." altloc: - http://tcw2.ppsw.rug.nl/prepublications/prepubsTCW-98-1.pdf chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: 'April, 1-4' conference: Second European Conference on Cognitive Modelling confloc: 'Nottingham, UK' contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Lebiere given: Christian honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Wallach given: Dieter honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Taatgen given: Niels honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1998 date_type: published datestamp: 1998-06-16 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/06/89 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: - family: Ritter given: Frank honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Young given: Richard honourific: '' lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 689 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/689/3/prepubsTCW%2D98%2D1.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'ACT-R, implicit learning, explicit learning, skill acquisition, instance theory, cognitive modelling, cognitive modeling, architectures of cognition' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:54:12 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: 183-189 pubdom: FALSE publication: ~ publisher: 'Nottingham University Press, Nottingham' refereed: FALSE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 12 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-09-12 16:32:55 subjects: - appl-cog-psy - cog-psy - comp-sci-art-intel - comp-sci-mach-learn - dev-psy succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: Implicit and explicit learning in ACT-R type: confpaper userid: 398 volume: ~
