--- abstract: 'Due to tremendous progress in digital electronics now intelligent and autonomous agents are gradually being adopted into the fields and domains of the military, defense and warfare. This paper tries to explore some of the inherent ethical issues, threats and some remedial issues about the impact of such systems on human civilization and existence in general. This paper discusses human ethics in contrast to machine ethics and the problems caused by non-sentient agents. A systematic study is made on paradoxes regarding the long-term advantages of such agents in military combat. This paper proposes an international standard which could be adopted by all nations to bypass the adverse effects and solve ethical issues of such intelligent agents.' altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: International Conference on Communication Systems and Network Technologies (CSNT-2011) confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: - sahon.dgro@acm.org creators_name: - family: Bhattacharyya given: Sahon honourific: Mr. lineage: '' date: 2011-04-05 date_type: completed datestamp: 2011-05-02 17:12:27 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/72/84 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: 0 edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 7284 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/7284/1/csnt2011_sahonbhattacharyya.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: unpub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'intelligent agents, military, computational ethics, problem of ethics, philosophy of science, artificial intelligence, machine ethics' lastmod: 2011-05-02 17:12:27 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: ~ pubdom: TRUE publication: ~ publisher: ~ refereed: FALSE referencetext: "[1]\tPatrick Lin, George Bekey, Keith Abney, 2008: “Autonomous Military Robotics: Risk, Ethics and Design” (US Department of Navy, Office of Naval Research, under awards #N00014-070101152 and #N00014-08-1-1209)\r\n[2]\tIsaac Asimov, 1950: “I, Robot”\r\n[3]\tTuncer Oren: “Ethics as a basis for sustainble civilized behaviour for human and software agents”, Acta Systemica, 2:1, 1-5\r\n[4]\tMichael Anderson and Susan Leigh Anderson: “Machine Ethics: Creating an Ethical Intelligent Agent”, AI Magazine, Vol.28 No. 4 (2007)\r\n" relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 24 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2011-05-02 17:12:27 subjects: - comp-sci-art-intel - comp-sci-robot - phil-ethics succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: 'Intelligent Agents in Military, Defense and Warfare: Ethical Issues and Concerns' type: confpaper userid: 13477 volume: ~
