--- abstract: 'Past research has demonstrated that reading efficiency is lower from standard computer displays of the 1980s than from paper. In the present experiments, subjects read or skimmed stories, sometimes from a high-quality CRT (cathode ray tube) and sometimes from a book. Skimming was 41% slower from the CRTs than from the book. Possible reasons for this finding are discussed. Reading speed and comprehension were equivalent for the high-quality CRTs and the book. The paperless office may be imminent after all.' altloc: - http://psych.utoronto.ca/~muter/pmuter2.htm chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Muter given: Paul honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Maurutto given: Paula honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1991 date_type: published datestamp: 1998-11-02 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/07/54 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 754 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/text_html.png;/754/1/pmuter2.htm full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: ~ lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:54:16 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 4 pagerange: 257-266 pubdom: FALSE publication: Behaviour & Information Technology publisher: ~ refereed: TRUE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 8 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-09-12 16:34:02 subjects: - appl-cog-psy - cog-psy succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: 'Reading and skimming from computer screens and books: The paperless office revisited?' type: journalp userid: 393 volume: 10
