--- abstract: Some important meta-theoretical insights about experimental psychology are integrated into the "conjectures and refutations" framework in order to reinforce a realist's view of scientific methodology. Some issues which may be difficult for the realist's position are discussed. It is argued that there is no need for the evidential observation to mimic the phenomenon of interest; such a mimicry may even be counter-productive. A case is also made that questions about ecological validity are not relevant to the rationale of experimentation. altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Chow given: Siu L. honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1987-07 date_type: published datestamp: 1999-07-26 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/08/16 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 816 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/text_html.png;/816/1/ecologx.htm full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'ecological validity, experimentation, realist, science, theory-dependent observation, atheoretical observation, generality, replication' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:54:18 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 2 pagerange: 181-194 pubdom: FALSE publication: Journal for the Theory of Social Behaviour publisher: ~ refereed: TRUE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 8 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-09-12 16:34:41 subjects: - cog-psy - phil-sci succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: 'Science, Ecological Validity and Experimentation' type: journalp userid: 141 volume: 17
