The records of a total of 84 patients seen between 1977 and 1999 in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya were analysed. Skeletal III deformity formed 85 of the sample with a female dominance of 2 to 1. The patients' age ranged from 17 to 36 years, with a mean of 25.3 years. The common surgical techniques used were combined bilateral sagittal split and Le Fort I osteotomy. The predominant ethnic group was Chinese (n=58, 69); followed by Malay (n=14, 17) and Indian (n=12, 14). date: 2002-12 date_type: published publication: Medical Journal of Malaysia volume: 57 number: 4 pagerange: 398-403 refereed: TRUE referencetext: Dimitroulis, G., Dolick, M.F., Sickels, J.E.V., (1994) Orthognathic Surgery: A Synopsis of Basis Principles and Surgical Techniques, , Oxford: Butterworth-Heinemann Ltd; Bishara, S.E., Burkey, P.S., Kharouf, J.G., Dental and facial asymmetries: A review (1994) Angle Orthod, 64, pp. 89-98; Obwegeser, H.L., Marentette, L.J., Profile planning based on alterations in the position of the bases of the facial thirds (1986) J Oral Maxillofac Surg, 44, pp. 302-311; Tomizawa, M., Nakajima, T., Ueda, K., Azumi, T., Hanada, K., Evaluation by patients of surgical orthodontic correction of skeletal Class III malocclusion: Survey of 41 patients (1981) J Oral Surg, 39, pp. 590-596; Nurminen, L., Pietila, T., Vinkka-Puhakka, H., Motivation for and satisfaction with orthodontic-surgical treatment: A retrospective study of 28 patients (1999) Eur J Orthod, 21, pp. 79-87; Kiyak, H.A., Hohl, T., Sherrick, P., West, R.A., Mcneill, R.W., Bucher, F., Sex differences in motives for and outcomes of orthognathic surgery (1981) J Oral Surg, 39, pp. 757-764; Hutton, C.E., Patients' evaluation of surgical correction of prognathism: Survey of 32 patients (1967) J Oral Surg, 25, pp. 225-228; Olson, R.E., Laskin, D.M., Expectations of patients from orthognathic surgery (1980) J Oral Surg, 38, pp. 283-285; Woon, K.C., The distribution of malocclusion in Malaysians (1983) Dent J Univ Malaya, 1, pp. 31-35; Cunningham, S.J., Crean, S.J., Hunt, N.P., Harris, M., Preparation, perceptions, and problems: A long-term follow-up study of orthognathic surgery (1996) Int J Adult Orthod Orthognath Surg, 11, pp. 41-47; Van Steenbergen, E., Litt, M.D., Nanda, R., Presurgical satisfaction with facial appearance in orthognathic surgery patients (1996) Am J Orthod Dentofac Orthop, 110, pp. 653-659; Nagamine, T., Kobayashi, T., Hanada, K., Nakajima, T., Satisfaction of patients following surgical orthodontic correction of skeletal class III malocclusions (1986) J Oral Maxillofac Surg, 44, pp. 944-948; Flanary, C.M., Barnwell, G.M., Alexander, J.M., Patient perceptions of orthognathic surgery (1985) Am J Orthod, 88, pp. 137-145; Woon, K.C., Thong, Y.L., Kadir, R.A., Permanent dentition occlusion in Chinese, Indian and Malay groups in Malaysia (1989) Aust Orthod J, 11, pp. 45-48; Samman, N., Tong, A.C., Cheung, D.L., Tideman, H., Analysis of 300 dentofacial deformities in Hong Kong (1992) Int J Adult Orthod Orthognath Surg, 7, pp. 181-185; Foo, G.C., Woon, K.C., Some Cephalometric norms in the young adult Malaysian Chinese males with harmonious facial appearances (1983) Dent J Mal Sing, 6, pp. 113-116; Cooke, M.S., Wei, S.H., Cephalometric standards for the southern Chinese (1988) Eur J Orthod, 10, pp. 264-272; Wilmot, J.J., Barber, H.D., Chou, D.G., Vig, K.W., Associations between severity of dentofacial deformity and motivation for orthodonticorthognathic surgery treatment (1993) Angle Orthod, 63, pp. 283-288; Thomas, P.M., Orthodontic camouflage versus orthognathic surgery in the treatment of mandibular deficiency (1995) J Oral Maxillofac Surg, 53, pp. 578-587; Tucker, M.R., Orthognathic surgery versus orthodontic camouflage in the treatment of mandibular deficiency (1995) J Oral Maxillofac Surg, 53, pp. 572-578; Garvill, J., Garvill, H., Kahnberg, K.E., Lundgren, S., Psychological factors in orthognathic surgery (1992) J Cranio-Maxillofac Surg, 20, pp. 28-33; Cheng, L.H., Roles, D., Telfer, M.R., Orthognathic surgery: The patient's perspective (1998) Br J Oral Maxillofac Surg, 36, pp. 261-263 citation: Ngeow, Dr. W.C.
