--- abstract: 'In 1986, Tanner and Mead \cite{Tanner_Mead86} implemented an interesting constraint satisfaction circuit for global motion sensing in aVLSI. We report here a new and improved aVLSI implementation that provides smooth optical flow as well as global motion in a two dimensional visual field. The computation of optical flow is an ill-posed problem, which expresses itself as the aperture problem. However, the optical flow can be estimated by the use of regularization methods, in which additional constraints are introduced in terms of a global energy functional that must be minimized. We show how the algorithmic constraints of Horn and Schunck \cite{Horn_Schunck81} on computing smooth optical flow can be mapped onto the physical constraints of an equivalent electronic network.' altloc: - ftp://ftp.ini.unizh.ch/pub/alan/nips98.ps.gz chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: december conference: Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems 11 confloc: 'denver, co' contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Stocker given: Alan honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Douglas given: Rodney honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1998 date_type: published datestamp: 1999-04-26 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/00/82 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 82 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_postscript.png;/82/1/nips98.ps|/style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/82/5/nips98.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: inpress issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'energy minimzation, optical flow, intensity constraint, aVLSI, neuromorphic, vision sensor, motion detection, constraint solving, analog network, real-time, collective computatio' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:53:39 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: ~ pubdom: FALSE publication: ~ publisher: 'MIT Press, Cambridge' refereed: FALSE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 14 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-09-12 16:22:48 subjects: - comp-neuro-sci - comp-sci-mach-vis succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: Computation of Smooth Optical Flow in a Feedback Connected Analog Network type: confpaper userid: 179 volume: ~
