--- abstract: 'An alternative view to the traditionally held view that schizophrenia is characterised by severely disordered cognition is presented. It is possible that apparently self-contradictory expressions of schizophrenics are well-formed communicative expressions of highly ordered cognitive systems. Building on the premise that behavior is in general communicative, and using Godel’s Incompleteness Theorem from logic as a model, it is shown that the most characteristic symptoms of schizophrenia (namely apparently self-contradictory thought, delusions and hallucinations) may indicate truths that cannot be derived within highly ordered cognitive systems.' altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Snyder given: Douglas M. honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1991 date_type: published datestamp: 1999-12-21 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/08/39 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 839 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/839/3/schizophrenia.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: "Godel's Incompleteness Theorem, schizophrenia, logic, cognitive systems, communication, delusions, hallucinations, consistency, incompleteness" lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:54:20 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 3 pagerange: 211-217 pubdom: FALSE publication: Speculations in Science and Technology publisher: ~ refereed: TRUE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 12 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-09-12 16:35:00 subjects: - clin-psy - phil-logic succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: An Alternative View of Schizophrenic Cognition type: journalp userid: 257 volume: 14
