?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=Only+Friends%2C+Despite+the+Rumors%3A+Philosophy+of+Mind's+Consciousness+and+Intentionality&rft.creator=Chartrand%2C+Louis&rft.subject=Philosophy+of+Mind&rft.description=Being+evasive+as+it+is%2C+philosophers+have+often+tried+to+do+without+consciousness.+Despite+this%2C+it+has+played+a+key+role+in+the+endeavours+of+philosophy+of+mind%2C+as+witnessed+by+its+reputation+as+a+%22mark+of+the+mental%22+and+works+of+philosophers+like+John+Searle+and+Daniel+Dennett.++Intentionality+has+shared+a+similar+role%2C+such+that+one+and+the+other+have+often+been+brought+together+in+a+symbiotic+relationship+(Searle+1990)+or+deemed+coextensive+(Crane+1998).%0D%0ASuch+promiscuity+is+not+necessary.+The+revolution+brought+about+by+embodied+and+situated+approaches+seem+to+leave+little+place+for+such+an+association.+Intentionality+is+seldom+studied+in+the+new+paradigm%2C+and+when+it+is%2C+new+models+of+it+are+applicable+to+biological+and+robotic+structures+which%2C+by+most+accounts%2C+probably+have+no+consciousness+(Millikan+1984%2C+Menary+2006).+Menary+(2009)+also+notes+that+the+same+could+be+said+of+scholastic+accounts+of+intentionality.+On+the+other+hand%2C+consciousness+is+being+studied+and+various+ways+which+do+not+involve+intentionality+or+anything+similar.%0D%0AI+suggest+that+the+association+between+these+two+notions+has+to+do+with+the+particular+intellectual+environment+that+prevailed+in+traditional+philosophy+of+mind.+Considerations+about+access+and+the+good+fortune+of+cognitivism%2C+among+other+factors%2C+made+for+a+culture+that+emphasized+the+gap+between+behaviour+on+one+hand+and+the+the+mental+states+that+characterize+us+when+we+are+in+a+disposition+to+cause+behaviour+on+the+other.+In+such+conditions%2C+concepts+like+intentionality+and+consciousness+acted+as+bridge+and+allowed+for+a+language+which+enabled+accounts+of+the+mind+that+remained+somewhat+comprehensive+and+unified%2C+while+leaving+the+gap+unfilled.+As+they+were+covering+the+most+problematic+and+elusive+parts+of+our+understanding+of+the+mind%2C+there+was+both+enough+similarity+in+the+ways+we+used+those+concepts%2C+and+enough+vagueness+in+how+we+accounted+for+their+realization+in+physical+systems%2C+to+make+a+rapprochement+inevitable.%0D%0AWhen+a+new+paradigm+swept+away+the+cognitivist+conception+of+representation%2C+some+philosophers+and+cognitive+scientists+turned+to+more+embodied+and+situated+models+of+cognition.+Representations+in+this+paradigm+(such+as+Millikan%E2%80%99s+(1995)+and+Clark%E2%80%99s+(1997))+are+%E2%80%9Caction-oriented%E2%80%9D%2C+thus+leaving+no+gap+between+action+and+representation+%E2%80%93+getting+an+account+of+the+complex+representations+that+we+communicate+in+propositions+is+thus+seen+as+a+matter+of+empirical+investigation.+If+there+is+no+gap%2C+concepts+like+intentionality+and+consciousness+are+called+to+play+different+roles+in+accounts+of+the+mind+%E2%80%93+roles+which+do+not+permit+any+confusion.%0D%0AThe+poster+will+highlight+relevant+differences+in+the+philosophical+climate+as+they+project+themselves+in+accounts+of+representation+(following+Gallagher+2008)%2C+and+make+salient+the+link+between+this+climate+and+the+role+of+cognition+in+philosophy+of+mind.&rft.date=2012-07&rft.type=Conference+Poster&rft.type=PeerReviewed&rft.format=application%2Fpdf&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F8678%2F1%2Fposter.pdf&rft.identifier=++Chartrand%2C+Louis++(2012)+Only+Friends%2C+Despite+the+Rumors%3A+Philosophy+of+Mind's+Consciousness+and+Intentionality.++%5BConference+Poster%5D++++(Unpublished)++&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F8678%2F<script src='//archive-bar.soton.ac.uk/archive-bar.js'></script>
