--- abstract: "A stream of conscious experience is extremely contextual; it is impacted by sensory stimuli, drives and emotions, and the web of associations that link, directly or indirectly, the subject of experience to other elements of the individual's worldview. The contextuality of one's conscious experience both enhances and constrains the contextuality of one's behavior. Since we cannot know first-hand the conscious experience of another, it is by way of behavioral contextuality that we make judgements about whether or not, and to what extent, a system is conscious. Thus we believe that a deep understanding of contextuality is vital to the study of consciousness. Methods have been developed for handling contextuality in the microworld of quantum particles. Our goal has been to investigate the extent to which these methods can be used to analyze contextuality in conscious experience." altloc: - http://www.vub.ac.be/CLEA/liane/PAPERS00/tokyo/tokyo99.htm chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: 'May 25-28, 1999' conference: Fundamental Approaches to Consciousness confloc: 'Tokyo, Japan' contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Aerts given: Diederik honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Broekaert given: Jan honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Gabora given: Liane honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 2000 date_type: published datestamp: 2000-09-21 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/09/74 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: - family: Yasue given: Kunio honourific: '' lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 974 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/text_html.png;/974/1/tokyo99.htm full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: inpress issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'contextuality, consciousness, hierarchy, concepts, cognition, quantum, collapse, superposition, stimuli, drive, emotion, conceptual network, emergence, criticality, constraint, microworld, closure, worldview, association, relationship, association, self organization, perturbation, edge of chaos, animal, opinion, probability, liar paradox, Hilbert space, illusion' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:54:23 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: ~ pubdom: FALSE publication: ~ publisher: 'John Benjamins Publishing Company, Philadelphia PA' refereed: TRUE referencetext: | [1] Aerts, D. and Durt, T.
