{"id":1702,"date":"2022-03-27T14:41:04","date_gmt":"2022-03-27T13:41:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/skywritings\/?p=1702"},"modified":"2022-03-27T14:41:04","modified_gmt":"2022-03-27T13:41:04","slug":"norms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/skywritings\/2022\/03\/27\/norms\/","title":{"rendered":"Norms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The selfish and amoral side of human nature and of the human population has an advantage: the advantage of lying over honesty, cheating over fairness, theft over toil, aggression over negotiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> If these were paired genetic alleles, we\u2019d have to admit that the selfish ones have the edge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But bullying and rule-breaking is also, by its nature, a minority strategy, because to open an unfair advantage a baseline of fairness has to be the norm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So cheating must keep waxing and waning &#8212; an unstable, unsustainable strategy, whether genetically or socially &#8212; because if everyone lies, cheats, steals, bullies, the strategy has no victims left: Its advantage is over innocent victims.
