Old warrior, you dispatched in life
\nnot few to an early void —<\/p>\n

the only way, perhaps you felt,
\nto spare your kin and kind
\na fate still worse,<\/p>\n

and not their first.<\/p>\n

Perhaps all warriors feel the same,
\nsome with just cause some not.<\/p>\n

But now your kin and kind shield you —<\/p>\n

or what if anything survives
\nof you within that helpless heap of flesh,
\ncollateral damage, residue
\nof love and hate, life, death and wrath yet
\nof their flesh flesh, and while your vital signs
\nstill signal life it’s not in vain:
\nYou’re still not altogether lost to them forever
\neven you no longer feel nor ever can again.<\/p>\n

You’re now for them a human shield
\na wall against their woe,
\nthe final redoubt from that void
\nthat’s those who love’s
