Agenda for Monday, Feb 16

Discussion on Design Elicitations Methods in HCI.

In this weeks interactions reading group, we will be discussing Design Elicitation Methods in HCI. The idea of eliciting information from users is extremely useful in designing systems or products that are practical and usable.

The 4 papers provide a broad spectrum of the methods that can be used to elicit different types of information about user interactions including emotions, experiences, functionality and aesthetics, all of which are integral components in any type of software or technology development project.

Primary paper: Design: Cultural probes.

This paper presents a non-scientific approach to design elicitation that requires methods that are highly creative and unique to the context of each project.

Supporting papers:

The group elicitation method for participatory design and usability testing

In contrast to the first paper, this is a very structured, methodological approach to eliciting information from a group of stakeholders in a project using the GEM technique.

Rapid ethnography: time deepening strategies for HCI field research.

Using a variety of ethnographic techniques with some slight alterations, a rapid ethnography approach is developed to elicit information from stakeholders when there is limited time alloted for the usability studies.

When you can't talk to customers: using storyboards and narratives to elicit empathy for users.

Empathy is used to elicit information from user interactions in a library even though the users are not part of the study using an interesting approach to storyboaring that focuses on the emotional experiences of user interaction.

Thoughts on any issues raised can be discussed on the Interaction discussion list if you are subscribed. If you aren't sure how to subscribe then mail us
