The fact that we know more about planets located ~25 million miles away (Venus) than we do our own oceans is astonishing. It gives me hope and excitement for the future of science and marine biology.

In terms of marine life, is there any estimates as to how many new/undiscovered species are present in the deep sea areas? Obviously, it is nearly impossible to know for sure, but I was just curious.

Also, does anyone know if there have been any breakthroughs or new technology, such as submarines or unmanned drones, to enable oceanographers to reach deeper depths? Just wondering!

Sea floor spreading at mid-ocean ridges, slumps, & subduction plus all the sub-sea events that result in earth quakes & tsunami. The seafloor can change from one day to another so any map will be out of date in no time at all and it could be years before it is re-mapped.

The World is in constant change so we can never really say we know all there is to know. A slight change in a genetic structure today ,could, in just a few generations, produce a completely new species
