Although this is a failrly 2 dimensional picture, It has many organisms within it, all of them exist in a delicate balance of temperature ranges, nutrient availablities, light intensities, etc.

The Ocean is not only the envorinment they live in, but also the organism that either does or does not control these essential life supporting components. It does so in a micro way for these organisms, as it does in a macro way for the planet as a whole.
