Multicorers take a number of small cores, up to 60cm long to capture the sediment water interface, but we use a piston corer for longer cores. This is a tube up to 40m long, with a varying weight at the top (1.5-5T). It has a small trigger corer attached, which descends ahead of the piston corer. There is about 10m of slack attached to to the trigger weight, which releases and allows the piston to sink faster into the sediment. The length of core retrieve really depends on the nature of the material cored,any sand or pebble layers normally stop the corer, and can sometimes break it. We have cores stored at NOC that have been retrieved over the last 40 years from depths up to 6500m.
