One of the many reasons why the ocean depths fascinate me so much is that many of the ocean-dwelling marvels are more bizarre than those of human imagination – just take a look at the blind shrimp or hairy-chested Yeti crab that dwell around hydrothermal vents (see Abbie’s ‘Vent Dominators’ blog post from earlier this month).

Although the science is fascinating, my own love of the seas started with the same kind of romanticism as you outline in the quote from Jules Verne: what if??? Now that scientists are revealing so much more about what is really out there at sea, it’s proving that Verne was right and the waters of our planet do indeed hold marvels. The seas are much more interesting and more relevant that the moon, to me and they hold wonders I will never cease admiring. Weedy sea dragon? What could be more magical?
