I agree. Waves are amazing. I recently heard an interview with wave photographer ray Collins. He described the waves he sees as having started on the other side of the world (if I understood him properly). I love that. You should check out his website. His photos are mind blowing.
Cheers, Matt

the 1000-year timescale it an approximation.

I am not exactly sure how long it would take for a water particle to travel from the Gulf of Stream to Southern Ocean.

You are right into thinking that CO2 in the atmosphere could be introduced into one part of the ocean and through ocean circulation this could have an effect another part of the world.

Here is an example that showcases how pollutants travel through the ocean:

However, bear in mind that CO2 is also transported through air circulation as well.

I would like to ask you, as an oceanographer, at the quickest route, how long would it take for the water from the Gulf stream to resurface in the Southern Ocean? 1000 years may be a complete overturning of the oceans but there must be some faster currents at the bottom of some deep canyons that would be quicker. As I live in New Zealand I am interested to now when the CO2 from Europe that has been absorbed by the sea will resurface in our region.

OK pouring rain and a howling gale but fun
