Many of these have now become better known – Grace Dieu, Great Harry, Royal George, and principally Mary Rose – which McKee had personally set about rediscovering, with the Southsea Sub-Aqua Club – and setting in motion the project that eventually led to her raising in 1982.

you’re absolutely right – at the time of writing there wouldn’t have been seen to be an issue with the use of the term ‘man’ in this way. In fact, in many parts of the world its still the linguistic norm. However, it is something that we try to move away from at the moment, just to make sure we’re not assuming things of the archaeological record – even subconsciously …

It is distracting and possibly inaccurate, as I would think such a concept did not even occur to Muckelroy! So many of us of his generation were educated so as to consider that ‘Man’ within such a framework included ‘Wo-man’. However, that is purely my opinion and you no doubt felt a need to include your comment for the younger generations studying this module.

I have just finished a 1960’s book by John Potter called ” The Treasure Divers a guide” still has a colossal amount of valuable information
