Well, I am no scuba diver or ever likely to be, but, I have taken a day course at Southampton that enables me to do a survey below high tide, and have helped on the Bouldnor Cliff project (Isle of Wight) and was one of the group that discovered the oldest bit (and it is a bit) of cord found in the UK amongst the sediment that had been brought up.
My other half though used to dive a lot, and was part of a British Services team that brought up artefacts from a wreck for the Cypriot government. His only memento left is a large piece of amphora.

My interest has always been in liners and naval vessels. As my daughter is a practicing archaeologist-but land based and a Roman specialist, a lot of what she does has rubbed off on me. I therefore wanted to increase my knowledge and enjoyment in Maritime History and couple it with this interesting course in Maritime Archaeology. My son bought me a book, a couple of years ago entitled ” Encyclopedia of Underwater and Maritime Archaeology” which is a British Museum publication edited by James P. Delgado….wetted my appetite even more. Although I do not dive I am very interested in research in any archival records.

the average age may be different, but there are certainly plenty of wrecks around New Zealand, and a very interesting and important maritime history; from initial colonisation through to present day. It’s a part of the world where a lot more research needs to be done.

However, I have never dived, can barely swim and, apart from seeing the Mary Rose being raised on TV, I know nothing about maritime archaeology! I hope this course will open my eyes.

Recently, I have begun to research the shipwreck of an East Indiaman, the Halsewell, on the Purbeck coast in 1786. This has led to a more general interest in the East India Company’s maritime service. It would be great if this course touches on 18th century shipwrecks at some point.

I grew up beside the sea and now I live in Greece (far from the sea) where I have seen teams investigating a sunken wreck from ancient times off the coast of Alonissos.

Over here in New Zealand we have our fair share of wrecks – although the average age is probably less than off the shores of Great Britain!

I am a nurse in North Carolina of the USA. It has been 10 years since I resided near a marine sanctuary or any shipwrecks. I am fascinated about Maritime archaeology in the Eastern hemisphere. I will enjoy delving iinto a topic outside of my normal scope.
