Thank you for your email. Please get in contact with Dr Lucy Blue (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/archaeology/about/staff/lkb.page) as the photos are from a research project and their reproduction would need to be permitted by her.

I am going to publish a work about watercraft technology in BAR publishing and I wanted to know if some of these pictures can be used to publish.

Thanks in advance

Julian

There’s a particular resonance (as well as unique set of skills) in the recording of murals and art.

It’s the eternal battle of academia – trying to get things published but also made accessible. If you are near any UK university libraries you can often get access as a visitor. Poor substitute I know, but this is something that should change in the next 5-10 years.

Recently, I began the process of preparing for archiving my infrared photographic work at Bonampak, Chiapas Mexico. I made the images for reference for the art department at National Geographic magazine, and for Yale University’s Bonampak Documentation Project. My work penetrated time and revealed the underdrawing (in the carbon line) made by the artists, as well as many previously unreadable glyphs throughout the three rooms. As an amateur in archaeology, I have depended on experts such as Dr. Miller, Dr. Steve Houston, Dr. Kurt Taube, and Dr. Diana Magaloni for their academic knowledge and cooperation both in the filed and afterward. My b&w infrared photos, as well as my color photography at Bonampak will be going to the Yale University archive being set up under a grant by Dr. Mary Ellen Miller. It was a privilege to be able to create the images under permits given to Dr. Miller by INAH in the mid-1990s, and now it is time to make sure they are available to academics in the future who wish to study the fragile, and yet enduring beauty and meaning of the murals, painted in the late 790s AD. – David W. Wooddell

Great suggestion. The discussion around archaeology and photography has really expanded in the last 10-15 years. It’s fascinating stuff.

Bohrer: Photography and Archaeology (Reaktion Books 2011). A nice introduction to start seeing trough all those stereotypes.
