Using Office PCs for Loudspeaker Design

The PACAN-D project aims to show how an existing serial finite-element code may be parallelised so as to show real commercial benefits to both large organisations and small-medium size enterprises. The code used was the PAFEC acoustic FE code parallelised by the PAC.

The PAFEC code is used by Celestion on their existing network of office PCs running MPI under Windows NT. It enables them to increase throughput and run larger test cases than previously possible.

The graph above shows that scalable performance can be obtained using co mmodity PCs running Windows NT, with Intel PCs offering similar price performance to Alpha-based PCs. Using their existing PC network Celestion have been able to save several thousand pounds.
