AHRC Review of research in modern languages

During 2006 the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies, in partnership with the University Council for Modern Languages, undertook a review of research in modern languages which was commissioned by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The review was completed in September 2006.

Outcomes: the review

The aim of the review was to gain a systematic understanding of the intellectual health of modern languages in the UK through the provision of a detailed picture of research patterns and developments. The resulting map of the intellectual landscape is intended to be a valuable resource for the research community as well as the AHRC and other stakeholders within and beyond the HE sector. Overall, the review concludes that research in Modern Languages is in remarkably good health. This is in contrast to the recent decline in secondary school language learning and undergraduate degrees in languages. On the contrary, the number of researchers has remained constant and the quality of their research is strikingly high.

The review was completed in September 2006 and the final report submitted to the AHRC. The Review is available on the AHRC website at the following links:
