Abstract
China is abundant in ethnic and folk cultural resources. The Center for Ethnic and Folk Literature and Art Development at the Ministry of Culture ran a project, whose aim was to construct a management system to preserve what has been collected and compiled during the past 30 years. The project called Books of Chinese Ethnic and Folk Arts, had lost the context information because of the lack of technologies. Now this storage and demonstration system is based on the digitalization of the original archive and fieldwork for folk cultural resource alive today, attached with various formats in text, image, audio and video. The structure of China Ethnic and Folk Culture Geographic Information System includes six integrated books (traditional opera, folk song, folk dance, folk literature, cultural space and intangible cultural heritage) and six themes (Peking opera organization, Shanxi opera stage, art life of Mei Lanfang, Shiyou Tiaonuo, Beijing story and a Shui village in Guizhou Province). The system also encompasses a geographic information system (GIS), a content management system (CMS) and a spatial database, showing four kinds of digitalization types for folk culture presentation: Map of life history, Distribution and/or Analysis map of cultural items, Spatio-temporal GIS and virtual reality of cultural space. Given a visible interpretation to compute and analyze regional distribution, the system promotes and disseminates knowledge on conservation and development of ethnic and folk culture. This system tries to not only to give an overview for folk culture research, but also for other related disciplines like history, anthropology and archeology. As an open system, it allows users to interconnect folk cultural information within a single zone and to share the knowledge with the public.
