Submit an essay before your virtual interview and you could be eligible for £5,000 for each year of your studies – up to a total of £20,000.
Physics and Astronomy has offered a scholarship scheme for more than 10 years. This year the awards will be made based on a short essay and an interview at a virtual Applicant Day.
The essay will be up to 500 words on a physics topic of your choice.
In order to enter you will need to submit your UCAS application to study physics at Southampton by 26 January 2022. You will need to submit your essay to us 7 days before your virtual interview.
Once you receive an offer from us, we’ll send you details of our Applicant Days and how to book.
So that we can be sure that you’ve written the essay yourself, you will be asked questions on the topic as part of your interview. We expect that the top five essays will lead to offers of the Achievement Award, unless there are unforeseen circumstances.
The scholarship consists of £5,000 upon registration for the first year and £5,000 per year for subsequent years, subject to continuing first-class performance, up to a total value of £20,000.
The scholarship scheme is now closed for 2022 entry.

If you have a sponsor who will be paying all or part of your tuition fees, you need to complete a fees sponsorship form to notify the Student Fees Office.

In addition to the funding provided by Physics and Astronomy and the University, our students also have the opportunity to be sponsored by companies during their degree programmes.
Southampton is one of only six UK universities to accept students sponsored by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) on the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS). The DTUS offers scholarships to students wishing to pursue a technical, engineeering or scientific career in one of the three armed services or the MOD civil service. More than 140 students at the University are now sponsored by the DTUS.
