This research will examine the renewed attention toward laboratory animal rehoming. This includes an investigation of the wider implications of rehoming on stakeholder relations, and an exploration of how rehoming raises ethical and regulatory issues with regard to the relations people have with animals both inside and outside of the laboratory space. Using boundary-work, the project will also investigate how an animal transforms from a scientific tool used to generate data, to a companion animal.
My questions for workshop participants include:
- What do you feel are the main barriers to rehoming laboratory animals within the research community?
- How might rehoming influence the ethical profile of a research facility, foster a culture of care, and affect staff morale?
- Where do anti-vivisectionist concerns sit in relation to laboratory animal rehoming?
