SSL’s software toolkit has the following main components:

  • Index+

This is an information retrieval, text orientated database system developed specifically for catalogue applications. It has a range of indexing tools and offers very efficient record management facilities. Originally developed for multi-user client/server architectures it now supports distributed network applications. As well as image libraries it has found niche applications in music retailing, in publishing and in the museums sector.

  • Terminology Client

This is a set of tools for managing authorities, key word lists, dictionaries, thesauri (both hierarchical and poly hierarchical). It provides a range of support tools for the creation and management of terminologies, such as the creation of candidate term lists and preferred term lists. Coupled with Index+ search tools searches can be specified for "broader than" and "narrower than" thesauri terms.

  • Networking and Connectivity Tools

There is a range of tools for supporting interoperability across the internet and web. These include interfaces for the Z39.50 protocol, OAI harvesting and the Index+ Bridge which allows the searching of specified remote resources from an Index+ session.

  • Application Development and Management Tools

These range from lower level C language APIs, through Windows tools for client application development and higher level administrative tools to help users manage their Index+ applications. They include tools for work flow management and multi-media resource management and reporting tools. Sector specific standards are followed, for example, support is provided for Spectrum compliant museum databases and the more general Dublin Core (Culture) datasets. An important subset is concerned with data import and export. Though XML is now widely used there are many legacy systems where specialized data ingestion and cleaning is required.

A company goal has been to pre-configure a range of applications for different sectors so that systems can be supplied quickly with substantial functionality requiring only final configuration and tuning to give customers implementations finely tuned to their individual requirements. We now offer such generic systems for picture libraries, for museum catalogues, for museum web and in-gallery public access, for publishers and for digital asset management generally.
