Making the most of e-journals, April 1998, Loughborough, UK

Traditional journal values and e-journals

Traditional journal features the academic community wants to retain:

  • high quality through peer review
  • archival sources
  • author recognition through strong journal identities
Rowland, F, Print Journals: Fit for the Future? Ariadne, issue 7, Jan. 1997

New e-journal features the community would like to add:

  • improved access
  • integrated citation linking, access to databases, search, etc.
  • lower optional costs
The problem is that the traditional features emphasise the 'journal in a box' approach, while the new features require that the literature breaks out of its box in many situations.
