Scariest sea creatures

1. Blobfish
Looks harmless, but I do not know what I would do if I found a “brain” swimming next to me…

2. Frilled shark
Look at those teeth. And the killer look!

3. Giant squid
Just compare the size of the scientists and that of the squid. It’s called giant for a good reason. The fact that the pic is black and white makes it even more terrifying (like a Hitchcock movie)

4. Vipefish
Thought to put the angler fish, but looking at that picture I changed my mind.

5. Moray eel
You are thinking “An eel? Seriously?”. Well yes, this particular eel always gave me the creeps. Notice the long, cold stare!

I find angler fish look quite threatening, although they are clever to use a “mock-fishing rod” to attract prey!

Definitely a stargazer fish. Seeing one of those little dudes staring up at you would be enough to put you off diving for the rest of your life! They look what you’d get if an evil aquatic alien married a psychotic muppet.

@ Eric you are right about the adaptations part. Everything in nature has its purpose
@ John, I have to admit I forgot the Barracuda.
@ Abigail it is interesting how different people view marine animals. Although I understand how you say jellyfish are scary, I believe they are really beautiful animals (gave me an idea about a future post on most wonderful-looking animals on oceans)
@ Damine & Helen it is generally good that all the scary-looking deep-sea fish (including the fantooth) are relatively small 😉

I don’t like the look of the fangtooth. Apparently it lives at least 2,000 meters down. Good job it’s only 6 inches long.

I think the frilled shark is rather cute, however that vipefish really gives me the shivers… those needle-sharp teeth and the big cold eye – no doubt excellent adaptations to it’s habitat
What I personally find most scary are jellyfish – on an instinctive level, even the not terribly venemous ones – especially when some really do swim or rather pulse towards me quite fast, even against the prevailing current. The flutterings in the tummy are probably at least partly due to having had a really bad allergic reaction to jellyfish stings as a child.
The beautiful upside-down jellies we get here sometimes, mostly on the sea floor, don’t give me the nervous feeling that the swimming ones do. They provide temporary habitat for many small fish and crustaceans, including protection for juvenile Banggai cardinalfish. Indeed we consider that riding on a jelly may be a way that juveniles of this extremely philopatric fish with no pelagic phase might sometimes be dispersed or carried to nearby but normally isolated populations – just one out of many aspects of the bio-ecology of this species that I would like to research further. The problem of dispersal for deep sea vent animals made me think back to this.
Smaller morays are quite often seen outside their lairs here, I love watching them, and their lazy undulations can suddenly become very fast indeed.
I agree with John about barracudas – unpredictable and with a track record of serious, seemingly unprovoked, attacks on divers (including our friend Tom Goreau).

Having said that the scariest sea creatures in man I think the scariest one I cam across was a great barracuda. While finning north of Sandy Cay near New Providence Bahamas many years ago we swam past an old Barracuda, about 15 ft below us and I reckon it was well longer than my buddy who was a good 6′. It had a retinue of smaller fish, waiting for pickings no doubt and it’s head was about 2′ long and a body like a tree! It was scary and fascinating and completely ignored us!

Fantastic creatures each with their niche, I always thought the Napoleon Wrasse was ugly but nothing on these creatures. I don’t why we expect fish to have eyes like ours, they are designed for a different purpose. Look at the Eel, top predator with eyes pointing forward is a master of the stealth attack. You see them in their holes in the reef and only rarely will you seem free swimming. I have seen it happen once in carless reef in the red sea. But that is more worrying as it looks like a big snake swimming in the water and they can move fairly quickly.

Unusual though necessery evolutional adaptations that these creatures needed to obtain in order to survive and be prominent in their environment.
