What The Oceans Mean To Me
As a climate scientist, it would be an obvious choice to write about how the oceans for me are an integral player in the climate system and a vessel for recording past climate change. Instead, I thought I’d share some of my favourite pictures of the oceans and what they mean to me.
One of the most well-known ocean features is how they cover about 71% of our planet, a fact that, when put in perspective and you realise how vast they actually are, is always truly staggering. For example, compare the size of North America to the Pacific Ocean in this image.
The picture below is taken from the BBC’s Blue Planet, one of my favourite shows on TV. This style of nature documentary never ceases to amaze!
How could a blog about what the oceans mean to me be complete without a seaside holiday picture!
The caravan parks of Swanage, Dorset, were the most regular holiday stop back when I was younger and so the coast here will always be special for me. The image here is from when I re-visited on holiday with some friends in 2014.
