SS City of Medicine Hat

Make your own paper Tudor artefacts

Last week we looked at the Tudor warship, the Mary Rose (Step 2.14 of the Mooc). For a bit of fun this weekend, why not try and make your own artefacts? Our friends at the Mary Rose Museum have a wonderful collection of paper craft Tudor era artefacts that you can make at home. All you need is a printer, scissors, glue and a bit of patience! The flagon took about 10 minutes and Henry VIII was at least 30 minutes to make. Continue reading →

Two craft boats to make at home!

By now, some of you may be wanting to share your love of maritime heritage with friends and family members. These are two model boats that I made this summer with my second cousins, ages 4-12. Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage site located on the Tamil Nadu coast of India, is world-renowned for its cave temples, Pallava era art and architecture (8th century AD) & shore temple. Between the Seas: Shipwrecks of Saskatchewan, Canada

Having grown up on the Canadian prairies, as far from the ocean as a person in that country can get, people often find it funny that I am now a maritime archaeologist. There is a common misconception that people need to live near the sea the have it affect their lives, however even the most land locked of places depend on rivers, lakes and streams for food and transport.
