David Charles De Roure (born September 3, 1962) is a Professor of e-Research at the University of Oxford in England and UK National Strategic Director for e-Social Science.

Background and Research

David has been closely involved in the UK e-Science programme and is best known for the myExperiment social web site for researchers, the Semantic Grid, and the UK’s Open Middleware Infrastructure Institute which he chaired from 2007-10.

In 2009 he was appointed as the National Strategic Director of e-Social Science by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

His personal research interests include e-Research, distributed information systems and music information retrieval. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society (FBCS) and a member of the Scientific Council of the Web Science Trust.

Career

David De Roure grew up in southern England and studied for an undergraduate degree in Mathematics with Physics at University of Southampton, where he also received his PhD in 1990 initially under the supervision of David W. Barron. He held a longstanding position in Southampton’s Department (later School) of Electronics and Computer Science from its formation in 1986, becoming a full professor in 2000. He moved to the Oxford e-Research Centre in July 2010.
