This one-day seminar was designed primarily for tutors in higher education concerned with the development of intercultural competence in students studying on languages or area studies programmes, or having to acquire intercultural competence for specific purposes. Presentations were given of six case studies of particular resources and methods developed with the acquisition or assessment of on intercultural competence as their main purpose.

The following themes were drawn out of the case studies:

  • the development of Web-based intercultural training materials which illustrate the practical application of theory and research findings to intercultural communication pedagogy;
  • intercultural learning materials designed with the distance learner in mind but adaptable to face-to-face learning situations;
  • the use of contemporary visual resources as a stimulus for intercultural learning;
  • the development of and/or assessment of intercultural learning of learners of languages for both specific business purposes e.g. engineers and construction managers and for general purposes
