Since 1993, the universities of Duisburg, Bochum and Portsmouth have been collaborating on research into aspects of university language learning, with the support of the Academic Collaboration Programme of the British Council and Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst. With the retirement of Professor Ulrich Raatz, 2001 also marks the completion of a joint project developing new tools to investigate the role of developing new tools to investigate the role of residence abroad in advanced language learning, and provides an ideal opportunity to bring together leading researchers in the field.
