SUBJECT CENTRE EVENTS
1. IMPLICATIONS OF THE HE WHITE PAPER : POLICY AND STRATEGY FOR LANGUAGES
21 May 2003 - School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London
There are still a few places available for this one-day event organised by the Subject Centre to facilitate discussions on the White Paper, the National Languages Strategy, links between pedagogical research and university teaching and learning, the 'New Landscape for Languages' study conducted for the Nuffield Foundation and the Collaboration Programme in Modern Languages in Higher Education. 2. KEY SKILLS AND ASSESSMENT IN LINGUISTICS
23 May 2003 - CILT, London
The Subject Centre Linguistics Group is organising this event to discuss the identification, teaching and assessment of key skills in the context of current practice in the discipline. 3. SET TEXTS? NEW APPROACHES TO THE TEACHING OF LITERATURE IN LANGUAGES AND RELATED STUDIES/AREA STUDIES

The Subject Centre is holding this one-day seminar to explore innovatory approaches to the teaching of literature in or translated from languages other than English. Particular emphasis will be placed on the evolving role of literature both as a subject of study in its own right (e.g. in language and area studies programmes) and as a tool of study in other disciplines (e.g. business, politics and the sciences). 4. RESOURCES AND TECHNIQUES FOR TEACHING LINGUISTICS

The Subject Centre will be holding a one-day seminar to explore innovatory approaches to the teaching of linguistics. We are currently inviting proposals for presentations (see below item 5). CALLS FOR PAPERS
5. Resources and Techniques for Teaching Linguistics (item 4 above) - 20/06/03
DEADLINE: 12 May 2003
The Subject Centre would welcome proposals for presentations of about 30 minutes on the development of methods or materials for teaching any aspect of linguistics. We are particularly interested in methods and materials for teaching data analysis techniques. Abstracts of no more than 100 words should be sent to Alison Dickens at a.m.dickens@soton.ac.uk by 12 May 2003.
6. Resources and activities for developing intercultural competence - 26/11/03
DEADLINE: 06 June 2003
The next in a series of Subject Centre resources events will take place at CILT, home of the Higher Education Resources Collection, on 26 November 2003. This event will look at resources and activities for developing intercultural competence. We welcome proposals from colleagues who would be willing to contribute their experiences using either published material or materials they have developed themselves aimed at developing students' intercultural competence.
Proposals for contributions of no more than 100 words should be sent to: Dawn Ebbrell, CILT/Subject Centre Higher Education Information Officer, he-enquiries@cilt.org.uk by 6 June 2003.

7. SCHML WORKSHOP "MANAGING LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING THROUGH TECHNOLOGY"
15 May 2003 - Sheffield Hallam University
The Standing Conference of Heads of Modern Languages in Universities is running a workshop on managing language learning and teaching through technology at Sheffield Hallam University on 15 May 2003. The workshop is being run in partnership with the Association for Language Learning (there is a discount for ALL members) and will be led by Derrik Ferney of Anglia Polytechnic University, who will deal with strategic implications of introducing digital technology. A representative of Tandberg UK will be present to answer questions. There will be a hands-on session in the digital language laboratories. SCHML's AGM will take place during the event. 8. TEACHING AMERICAN LITERATURE
24 October 2003 - Senate House, London
This symposium is being co-hosted by the LTSN English Subject Centre and AMATAS and will give delegates the opportunity to reflect on approaches to, and stategies for, the delivery of curricula or elements of curricula which focus on literary and cultural studies perspectives on America and Americanisation. Proposals for papers are now being accepted. They should be up to 500 words in length and should deal directly with teaching issues. They should be sent, in the first instance, to Petrina Farrington at the English Subject Centre, Royal Holloway College, University of London, Egham, Egham Hill, TW20 0EX.

10. ERIC Clearing Houses - threatened cut in funding

The Subject Centre has learned from the Baal mailing list that there is a threat to cut funding for the ERIC Clearing House facility. 11. WHY NOT LIAISE WITH YOUR PRIMARY SCHOOLS - EUROTALK LANGUAGE CHALLENGE
Colleagues may be interested in following up language software company Eurotalk's language challenge http://www.eurotalk.co.uk/jlc with their local primary schools as a way of building links. This is an initiative which has the full support of CILT. First Prize - a trip to Lapland for the winner and their family.
