1. RESOURCES AND TECHNIQUES FOR TEACHING LINGUISTICS

3. FOUNDATION DEGRESS IN LANGUAGES, LINGUISTICS AND AREA STUDIES : Open Meeting

11 July 2003, London
We are hoping to convene an informal meeting in London on the morning of 11 July 2003 to discuss the implications of foundation degrees for Modern Foreign Languages. Please email the Subject Centre on llas@soton.ac.uk if you would be interested in attending such an event.

4. ECML - Submission of project proposals for 2nd medium-term programme

DEADLINE : 30 June 2003
The European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe in Austria have sent out a reminder that the deadline for submission of project proposals for the second medium-term programme of ECML (2004-2007) is 30 June 2003. All relevant information can be found on the following website: http://www.ecml.at/interactive/2MTP_forum.asp The ECML seeks proposals from language experts, trainers, teachers and researchers who wish to engage in projects or sets of activities within the framework of its next medium-term programme.

5. 4th Annual IALIC Conference: The Intercultural Narrative

14 - 16 December 2003 - University of Lancaster
The International Association for Languages and Intercultural Communication has issued a call for proposals for its 4th Annual Conference which is being organised jointly by IALIC and the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) at Lancaster University. 6. MATSDA WORKSHOP: Materials for Cultural Awareness

Friday 20 June - Sunday 22 June 2003, The Marton Arms Hotel in Thornton-in-Lonsdale, Ingleton, Yorkshire. Materials Development Association is organising a weekend workshop this month in the West Yorkshire Dales on the theme of cultural awareness. 7. TEACHERS' CONFERENCE IN MODERN LANGUAGES AND LINGUISTICS

18 June 2003 - University of Leeds
The School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Leeds is holding a Teachers' Conference on 18 June 2003 at the University. For further information please visit their website at http://smlc01.leeds.ac.uk/ . This event is open to teachers at schools and colleges in Yorkshire and elsewhere. Registrations must be received by Monday 9 June 2003.

8. SUBJECT CENTRE NOTEBOOK

The first Subject Centre year book is now in the final stages of production and will be available mid-July. In addition to the updated "Why Study Languages" CD, with new presentations on linguistics and area studies, it will include up to date statistics on secondary-level examination entries and 2002 student numbers with an explanation of the new UCAS course codes. An online order form will be available later this month for you to order your free copy.

9. New SCHML Executive and website

The Standing conference of Heads of Modern Languages in Universities (SCHML)has a new Executive Committee chaired by Jocelyn Wyburd, Executive Director, Language Centre, University of Manchester. SCHML are also pleased to announce the launch of their new website at: www.schml.ac.uk.

10. Update on Nuffield ELP Project

With support from the Nuffield Languages Programme, ten universities will be implementing and evaluating the use of different adult versions of the European Language Portfolio (ELP) during the first semester of the next academic year. Case studies based on a range of different learning contexts and a workshop to be held in early March will be the end result. If any other colleagues who are thinking of implementing the ELP would like to join in the process and the discussions we will be having, please contact Vicky Wright (vmw@soton.ac.uk) for further information. We regret that there is no further funding available.
