1. Routes into reading: Promoting the study of foreign literatures

This one-day conference will present ideas and strategies for creating interest and enthusiasm among students for the study of foreign language literatures.

2. CILT library resources collection open visit
Less Widely Used and Lesser Taught (LWULT) Languages

This event, held by CiLT in conjunction with the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies will introduce attendees to the range of resources available in the Library at CILT, including the Higher Education Resources Collection and will also focus on teaching and learning materials available for Less Widely Used and Lesser Taught (LWULT) Languages, both European and non-European.
3. Introduction to methods for pedagogic research in languages, linguistics and area studies
Friday 17 June 2005 at CILT, London
This interactive workshop is a one-day introduction to methods for pedagogic research. No previous experience of using social science methods is assumed. The programme is to be confirmed, but is expected to cover the following topics:
- Formulating research questions
- Questionnaire design and analysis
- In-depth interviewing and focus groups
- Ethics in research
- Dissemination and reporting
The workshop is free, but participants will need to provide their own lunch.

4. Workshops to go (Subject Centre's Workshops to Go scheme): Making the best use of VLEs
This workshop is being run at Sheffield Hallam University and at the University of Southampton on SEPARATE dates.
It is designed to give participants the opportunity to explore and discuss the potential of VLEs to provide a stimulating and effective learning environment for language learners. The workshop will be a mixture of demonstration, hands-on and discussion and will focus mainly on the use of Blackboard to create on-line language learning activities for beginner and intermediate level students. It will also cover issues such as the role of a VLE in the language learning curriculum, how to plan a VLE course and how to incorporate the on-line activities into the curriculum.

5. Workshops to go (Subject Centre's Workshops to Go scheme): Working with interactive multimedia for language learning
Thursday 23 June 2005 9.30am - 4.30pm
Venue: School of Languages & Area Studies, Park Building, King Henry 1st street. University of Portsmouth. Melissi Labs 3.14 and 3.16 3rd Floor
The workshop will provide a hands-on opportunity for EFL and MFL teachers to familiarise themselves with the functionalities of a digital language learning classroom. It will present pedagogical material, which has been designed to exploit the numerous functionalities of this software and apply it to a range of different teaching and learning contexts. Participants will be given the chance to evaluate the material from the perspectives of both teacher and learner
It will provide an opportunity for participants to reflect on the changing roles of teachers and learners in the digital language learning classroom.

6. Call for Humanities graduates
The Subject Centre is looking for graduates of English, History, Classics, Archaeology, Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies to be interviewed for research project investigating longer term employability. We are particularly interested in talking to graduates who have been working for the past 3 years.

Search 700 reasons for studying languages. There is now an online searchable database of the 700 Reasons published in the recently produced 700 Reasons Report. You can search reasons by keyword. To order a copy go to the order form.
