The decision on the European Year of Languages 2001 was formally adopted at the June meeting of the Education Council.The objectives of the year will be:
- to raise people's awareness of the richness of linguistic and cultural diversity within the European Union, taking into account that all languages have equal value
- to encourage multilinguilism
- to highlight the advantages of the knowledge of several languages as a key element in personal and professional development
- to encourage the life-long learning of languages
- to collect and disseminate information and best practice in language learning
The overall budget for the European Year of Languages will be 8M Euro.Measures supported during the year will include meetings and events, information and promotional campaigns and research studies.Some of these measures will receive 100% Community financing, the majority will be on a shared-cost basis, with a Community contribution of 50%.
